HARTSVILLE, S.C., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- James Harrell, Sonoco's (NYSE: SON) senior director of operations-Europe, has been promoted to division vice president-Industrial Products/Paper Divisions-Europe, effective immediately, it was announced today by Ronald E. Holley, senior vice president-Global Industrial Products, and Jim C. Bowen, senior vice president- Global Paper Operations.

Harrell replaces Charles F. Paterno, who has served as vice president- Industrial Products/Paper Divisions-Europe since 1996. Paterno will return to the United States where he will be working on special projects in the Industrial Products and Paper Divisions, reporting to Holley and Bowen.
Harrell, a 1985 graduate of Francis Marion University with a B.S. degree in Business Administration and is nearing completion of an MBA from Duke University. He joined Sonoco in 1985. He has held a number of domestic and international management positions in the Company's industrial and consumer segments. Prior to his most recent assignment in Europe, he served as president of Sonoco Ltd. in Canada, general manager of cone operations in the U.S. and operations director of the former Capseals Division in Slough, England.
