DiversityPlus Magazine has named Marc Ensign, Sonoco’s director,
services/outsourcing and supplier diversity, a 2009 Champion of
Diversity in its Third Annual Champions of Diversity Awards. Sonoco
(NYSE: SON) is one of the largest diversified global packaging companies.
To identify nominees for its Champion of Diversity Awards, DiversityPlus
Magazine surveyed more than 15,000 U.S. suppliers, asking them to
assess corporate diversity leaders based on their company’s growth in
annual diversity spend, responsiveness to suppliers, new initiatives,
best practices, benchmarking goals and significant accomplishments
impacting diversity. An independent editorial panel then meticulously
evaluated the suppliers’ 83 nominees, determining that only 25 qualified
as champions. Ensign and Sonoco were recognized for quadrupling the
Company’s diversity spend in the past five years and for finding
innovative ways to use diverse suppliers in nontraditional areas.
